Want to know more?

What is cast glass?
Cast glass refers to glass that is a solid mass that has been produced by heating the glass to around 800c and melting it into a mould. The glass we use is a fine quality lead crystal that has similar properties to crystal stemware.

How long does the child need to keep still for?
The child or baby only needs to be still for approximately 40 seconds. Even if the child wiggles the casts generally work. It is however better to take the cast while the child is relaxed or distracted, as it curbs the tendency for them to want to play in the mixture.

How long does it take until the keepsake is ready?
The cast crystal is ready 6 weeks from the time of the cast.

Are the finished products fragile?
As the glass is a solid mass it is quite durable and able to withstand more knocks than the average drinking glass. However if dropped onto a hard surface they will chip or crack.

What is the size of the finished article?
A handprint of a baby’s or young child’s hand is approximately 15cm high and 12cm wide, they generally weigh between 1.5 – 2kg.

Is the moulding material safe?
The moulding material that comes in contact with the child’s skin is non-toxic and non-allergenic. The product is medical grade and is specifically designed for casting on skin. This product is used extensively in private and public medical practices and is harmless if ingested, but naturally we do not recommend it. It does not heat up as normal plaster will. We do not use plaster directly on skin.

How does the process work?
We take a cast of the child’s hand and/or foot, this process usually takes about ½ hour as we take two or three casts so we have a number to select from, each cast only takes about 1 minute to complete. We like to allow ½ hour ensuring the child is comfortable and not distressed. Once this process is complete we make a series of moulds including a master mould, from which we then cast the glass. Once cast the crystal is cut, polished and engraved. At no time does the child come in contact with plaster or glass.

Can multiples be taken from a single cast?
If you would like to have duplicates made of your cast this can be done at the time of the first cast or at a later date as we keep all the original casts for 6 months. We also offer a 15% discount on identical duplicates.
